Idiom (Latin: idioma, “special property”, f. Greek: ἰδίωμα — idiōma, “special feature, special phrasing”, f. Greek: ἴδιος — idios, “one’s own”) is an expression, word, or phrase that has a figurative meaning that is comprehended in regard to a common use of that expression that is separate from the literal meaning or definition of the words of which it is made.^[1] There are estimated to be at least 25,000 idiomatic expressions in the English language.^[2]

In linguistics, idioms are usually presumed to be figures of speech contradicting the principle of compositionality; yet the matter remains debated. John Saeed defines an “idiom” as words collocated that became affixed to each other until metamorphosing into a fossilised term.^[3] This collocation — words commonly used in a group — redefines each component word in the word-group and becomes an idiomatic expression. The words develop a specialized meaning as an entity, as an idiom. Moreover, an idiom is an expression, word, or phrase whose sense means something different from what the words literally imply. When a speaker uses an idiom, the listener might mistake its actual meaning, if he or she has not heard this figure of speech before.^[4] Idioms usually do not translate well; in some cases, when an idiom is translated into another language, either its meaning is changed or it is meaningless.

Motivating yourself is an important attribute in student success. You will take control of your learning when you begin motivational techniques.

You need to go ahead and study some every day. Don't get so behind that you have to read the entire book before a test. A little studying every day will make a huge difference. Whenever your teacher gives you an assignment, go ahead and work out an outline or a plan that evening. It is best not to put the paper away until the assignment is due. Get familiar with the assignment and find out what you have to have to complete it.

Realize what makes you want to study. You may want to learn the subject, or you may want to earn a degree. You need to know what is driving you forward. The best motivator is yourself. If you understand why you want something, then you will become more focused on attaining it.

It helps to put all your assignments into smaller segments and set goals as to when to finish. Every time you study, have a small goal - read five pages, write three paragraphs - to get done during that session. By separating the overall assignment into smaller bits, you will feel that you have accomplished something and want to do more.

The most important motivational force is going ahead and doing something with the task at hand. Don't procrastinate. Accomplishing a small goal will make you feel better. When you finish one task, go ahead and put down your goals so you will be focused for the next task.

Sometimes it helps to have a mentor, a faculty member or a friend with whom to discuss your work. A third person can point out what you have accomplished and encourage you to do more.

Study Tips - Revising and Proofreading Assignments

Before turning in your writing assignments, you always need to revise and to proofread. These two processes are separate. Revising focuses on content while proofreading focuses on mechanics.

Do not revise immediately after writing the paper. Wait. It is a good idea to read the paper out loud. Read it line by line to see how it flows. Check to make certain the title and subheadings accurately reflect the content. Make sure you get the reader's interest in the first paragraph. Check each succeeding paragraph to be sure they build on each other. Read the conclusion and see if the paper supports it.

Check your sentences and vocabulary to make sure they stay consistent throughout the paper. Make sure that you do not use slang terms or popular sayings in a formal assignment.

When it is time to proofread, it is helpful to get somebody else to read your paper. You know what you wanted to say so often you will see what you meant to say, not what is actually on the paper. Another set of eyes may spot grammar errors as well as inconsistencies in logic or fact.

Be aware of errors that you may make. Go ahead and use the spell and grammar check on the computer. Don't forget that you can mistype a word and that word will still pass the spell checker. For instance, you can type "do" for "due" and change the meaning of the sentence, but the spell check won't catch it because the word is spelled correctly. It may help to read out loud when proofreading. When doing so, read quite slowly so your mind will be able to focus on each word.

Good Study Habits

It will help you in your college career to develop good study habits. The first thing you need to do is take responsibility for your actions. You are the only one who can decide your priorities and how to use your time and resources.

Don't allow yourself to become distracted by friends and fellow students. Keep in mind the bigger picture. Know what you have to do and when it needs to be done. Keep your goals in mind. Don't let other people influence you into not doing your work.

Figure out your most productive times of the day. If you study best in the morning, plan to study your hardest subjects first. If you have trouble concentrating at a certain time, don't get out your hardest subjects or your most complex project.

If you do not understand the course material, try some innovative ways to learn it. Don't just keep rereading the material in hopes that you will eventually understand it. Ask your instructor for help. If your school has study sessions and peer tutors, take advantage of these offerings. Set up study groups within your class.

When you put your best effort in your work, then you have succeeded. If you are satisfied with what you have done and know that you have done your best, then your grade is the icing on the cake. Always give your best in the classroom and in study sessions. By doing so, you will know that you have tried.

Proper note taking is vital to student success. Everyone needs to develop a strategy for taking notes that is best suited for personal learning. There is no one way to keep a notebook. Take your notes the way that is best for you. In order to take good notes, you must be an active listener in your classroom.
 
Some key words in a lecture that you should alert you to note taking may include lists. Any time several reasons are given for something, write it down. Cause and effect statements are usually key points. If something that occurs has a direct relationship on something else, it will be good to note it.
Definitions should always be included in notes, especially when your teacher adds some relevant material. Teachers also give examples which may be listed under definitions in an effort to understand the concept better.
 

Whenever a superlative is used, such as the best, the largest, the greatest, then put that in your notebook. As you listen to your teacher, pick up on the speech patterns. Usually teachers speak more slowly and possibly louder when something is important. The teacher will often repeat something that is vital for you to know.

After the class, go over your notes. It is a good idea to read them out loud. Relate the notes to what you have already learned in the class. Review the notes again before going to class. Get into the habit of taking good notes. Don't rely on anyone else in the class to take them for you. You may compare notes, but don't copy them.

It is good to practice several writing strategies while in college. When you write something down, it forces you to think about it and to develop the thought. When you have it on paper, you may see that your idea isn't logical or doesn't fit the facts.
 
Keep your mind open to new ideas when writing. Practice brainstorming, mapping and outlining. Put down thoughts that come into head. They may be useful later. Write out your ideas about papers. The more you write, the more you generate new ideas.
 
Sometimes it is good to have a deadline. Without a due date, you may never finish. A deadline gives you a focus to keep in mind when writing. It is a good idea to make sure you are within the limit assigned, whether by number of words or pages. This type of discipline makes your writing better.
 
Make sure you proofread and edit. Check your work and try to have somebody else check it. It is always good to write something and put it down for a few hours or preferably a day or two. The chance to go back to it gives you a different perspective and attitude toward the writing. Editing does not have to be tedious. Revising can improve your paper immensely, and it will improve your writing.

Your first draft does not have to be perfect. Let your thoughts get down on the paper, then straighten them out grammatically. The creativity that comes from writing down thoughts as quickly as they come to you is valuable.

Grammar and spelling are extremely important in writing. Don't turn in any writing assignment that has not used an electronic and/or a human spelling and grammar check.
 
It is a good idea to run grammar check when using a word processing program. It may help to keep a grammar usage handbook handy through your academic career so you can refresh your memory on rules regarding commas, semicolons and colons. Be sure to check for dangling and misplaced modifiers. Watch your parallelism and consistency in language.
 
Spelling errors are common, even on computers. If you know you have a spelling problem, keep a notebook or sheet of words you commonly misspell so you can check them in a paper. Have a spelling or word book handy. Another good idea is to keep a list of common spelling rules, such as the "I" before "e" except after "C" saying. You can refer back to this list while writing. Always spell check documents on a word processor. When you are proofreading your writing, look for spelling errors. Look for words that you know that you frequently misspell.

It is often a good idea to get another person to look at your document. That person may spot an error that you did not see because you knew in your mind how it should read, not how it was printed. Keep a dictionary handy when writing. You may want to use a traditional dictionary or an online one. Whatever is easiest and works best for you is what you should use. Take advantage of any and all tutoring or assistance programs available to you.

Algebraic Problems



Algebraic problems become easy to solve if a simple system is used and followed. In order to solve the algebraic problem, you need to process functions in a certain order to arrive at the right answer. The functions that need to be in order are addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
 
A simple acronym has been developed to help students solve algebraic problems. The acronym is as follows: P.E.M.D.A.S. This stands for the following: Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction.
 
The first function to perform in an algebraic problem is to solve the operations listed in the parenthesis. Next settle the exponents. The next process is multiplication and division. You need to work from left to right. The last function is addition and subtraction. You need to work from left to right with these functions also. Always be sure to work from left to right.

Remember that you are working to get one answer on one side of an equal sign. All of the functions work toward this point. Derivative word problems are easily solved by going through the text and extracting the relevant numeric information. The purpose of finding the derivative in a word problem is so you will know the slope of the line on a graph, the point of inflection or the rate of change of the graph. Isolate out the equation in a word problem to get the derivative.

Google, blogger sued by restaurant for RM6mil

KOTA KINABALU: A popular Indian cuisine restaurant here that is recommended by travel guide Lonely Planet, is suing a blogger and Google for defamation.

Jothy's Fish Head Curry restaurant director Tharumaraj Sivaperumal filed a RM6mil civil suit at the Kota Kinabalu High Court here Monday, naming blogger Poh Huai Bin as first defendant and California-based Google Inc as second defendant.
The suit is arising from some allegedly defamatory statements about Jothy's Fish Head Curry restaurant posted in May last year by Poh, originally from Sibu in Sarawak and now residing in Kuala Lumpur.
Jothy's, represented by counsel Marcel Jude Joseph, is seeking exemplary or punitive damages to deter them from making similar statements in future and an order to restrain Poh from defaming the restaurant on the Internet.

Jothy's is also seeking an order from the court to remove the offending articles from Google and other popular search engines used on the Internet.

The company claimed that the alleged defamatory statements published by both the defendants tended to prejudice against the plaintiff in the conduct of its business and deter others from dealing with it and were injurious to the business.
As a result of the defendants' action, the plaintiff claimed it had suffered loss and damage, and its reputation had been affected both locally and internationally.

The plaintiff claimed that the good reputation of the restaurant, in operation since 1987, was known globally and reported as a well-known destination in Kota Kinabalu and Sabah, in the global television and book series Lonely Planet, referred to as an authority for tourists throughout the world.

The plaintiff also claimed that the posting and articles of the first defendant were available and read by Internet users throughout Sabah and Malaysia, adding that the second defendant conducted business within the jurisdiction of Malaysian courts because its search engine was used regularly by Internet users in the country.
